Earthquakes in El Salvador




In the last hundred years El Salvador has shook with at least 13 strong earthquakes, excluding the multiple volcanic tremors which occur constantly due to the volcanic presence. Which are often reffered to by the date. Some of the the ones which caused more destruction were:
  • Jucuapa-Chinameca on May 6, 1951 (400 deaths)
  • La Libertad on May 3, 1965 (125 deaths)
  • San Salvador on October 10, 1986. (1,000 deaths)

The 1965 La Libertad earthquake had less deaths than the ones on 2001 since this one had a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale less than the 2001 replica. Although it still left about 500 injured and more or less 48,000 homeless.

The 1986 San Salvador earthquake was a very strong one had a magnitude of and this time resulted in 1500 deaths, 10,000 injuries, and 100,000 people left homeless. Some people say this earthquake was the strongest 'till the momment.

The 2001 earthquake was one of the greatest and most terifing earthquakes that had ever hit El Salvador. This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter Scale. This was the 1st earthquake to hit El Salvador in 2001. Then a month after that another earthquake hit El Salvador. For these 2 earthquakes the COEN had recorded 944 dead; 5,565 injured and a total of 1,364,160 victims.
